Switch Pro Controller test

Pair the Pro Controller with your computer, phone or tablet and check both sticks, every button and ZL and ZR, with a plain result at the top.

Press any button on the controller

Browsers show a controller only after a button is pressed, so that pages cannot list your devices unasked. Wired or Bluetooth both work.

How it works

  1. Pair it over Bluetooth: hold the small sync button on its top edge until the player lights run, then choose «Pro Controller» in your device's Bluetooth settings. A USB-C cable works on some computers.
  2. Open this page and press any button; the test shows it with Nintendo's letters: B is the bottom button, A the right one.
  3. Press A, B, X, Y, L, R, Minus, Plus, both stick clicks and the arrows. Home is optional: the computer may take it.
  4. Press ZL and ZR, run the drift check, turn both sticks round their edges, and try the rumble.
  5. Keep the report: printed, as a PDF, or copied into a message to the shop.

What the results mean

Nintendo's letters, by position
The browser lists a controller's buttons by where they sit. On a Nintendo controller the bottom one is B and the right one A, the other way round from Xbox: the test names them as printed.
ZL and ZR are on or off
The Pro Controller's ZL and ZR are buttons, not pressed in steps, so they read 0 or 100 %. A trigger check that says «presses fully» is all they can show.
When the buttons show as numbers
Some browsers do not recognise the Pro Controller's layout and list its buttons as Button 1, Button 2 and so on. The test still reads each one; press them in turn.
Rumble
Its HD rumble runs only where the browser can drive it; when it cannot, the test says so and the rest is not affected.

Questions

Does it test Joy-Con?

Yes, on a page of their own. Chrome and Edge on a computer join a pair into one controller, and a single Joy-Con is read with only the buttons it has.

The stick drifts in games but the test says no drift. Why?

Run the drift check with the controller lying flat and untouched, and turn the stick round its edge: a stick that only drifts after being pushed one way shows in the range check as a short direction.

It will not pair. What now?

Disconnect it from the Switch first (it reconnects there when the console is on), then hold the sync button again until the lights run.

Does the test need the Switch nearby?

No. Once the Pro Controller is paired with this device it is read here alone; keep the Switch off while testing, or it may pull the controller back.
