Controller button test

Press every button once. Each one lights as it registers; one that never lights, or that counts a single press twice, is named in the result and the report.

Press any button on the controller

Browsers show a controller only after a button is pressed, so that pages cannot list your devices unasked. Wired or Bluetooth both work.

How it works

  1. Connect the controller by cable or Bluetooth; the first button you press wakes the test.
  2. Press each button once, at your normal speed: the face buttons, the bumpers, the stick clicks, the arrows, then the small ones in the middle.
  3. A button that lights is fine. One that stays dark after a few firm presses did not register.
  4. Then press any button you doubt a dozen times, at your normal pace. If it lights twice for one press, the test counts a double click and names the button.
  5. Copy or print the report: it lists the buttons that never registered and the ones that doubled.

What the results mean

A double press is a worn contact
Under each button a small contact closes when you press. Worn or dirty, it can open and close again within a few hundredths of a second, so one press reaches the game as two: a jump turns into a double jump, a menu skips an item. Pressing at a normal pace, a finger stays off a button far longer than that; the test counts any release under 40 ms between two presses as one press read twice.
What the page can see
This page reads the controller once a screen frame: about every 17 ms on a 60 Hz screen, more often on a faster one. A contact that bounces between two readings can be missed here, while a game running at a higher frame rate may still catch it. A double click that shows here is real: the contact opened between two readings, and a game reading as often may see it too.
Buttons no web page can read
The home button on some systems opens the system's own menu and never reaches the page, so the test does not wait for it. Extra buttons such as back paddles and some function keys are not passed to web pages at all: check those in the console's or the maker's own settings.
Names, as printed on your controller
The test names each button as its maker prints it: Cross and Circle on PlayStation, A and B on Xbox, B and A swapped on Nintendo. A controller the browser does not recognise shows its buttons by number.

Questions

A button never lights up. Is it broken?

Press it firmly a few times, then try the cable instead of Bluetooth and close any program that may hold the controller, such as Steam. If it still stays dark here and in games, the button or its contact has failed.

The test counted a double click. What can I do?

Press the button again a dozen times at your normal pace, and read how many of the presses doubled: once can be a slip, but a button that doubles again and again has a worn contact. Cleaning sometimes helps; otherwise it needs the button's contact or membrane replaced, by a repair shop or the maker under warranty.

Why does my controller show «Button 18»?

Past the standard buttons, the browser numbers what it finds, such as a touchpad click or a capture key. The test names the ones it knows for your controller and numbers the rest.

Can I test a keyboard or a mouse here?

No: this test reads game controllers only.
