Controller vibration test
Each button runs a motor for one second: the strong one, the weak one, or both. Say whether you felt it; a motor that stays still counts in the result and the report.
Press any button on the controller
Browsers show a controller only after a button is pressed, so that pages cannot list your devices unasked. Wired or Bluetooth both work.
This browser cannot read controllers.
Try a current Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari on a computer, Safari on an iPhone or iPad, or Chrome on Android.
The controller was disconnected. Connect it again and press a button; your results are kept.
Result: No problem found so far
Press every button, then run the checks below: the result is written here as you go.
Rumble
Each button runs a motor for one second. The tab must stay in front while it runs.
This browser cannot run this controller's motors: Firefox and the browsers on iPhone and iPad run none, and Chrome and Edge on Windows do not run a PS5 controller's. The rest of the test is not affected.
Sticks
The rings are dead zones: the inner one 10 %, which many games use, the outer one 24 %, Xbox's standard for the left stick (27 % for the right).
Drift check
Put the controller down and do not touch the sticks. The check reads them for three seconds.
Range check
Push each stick to its edge and turn it slowly round, two or three times.
Buttons
Press each one. A button turns blue while held and stays ticked once it has worked.
Triggers
Press each trigger all the way down. A trigger reports how far it is pressed, not just on or off.
Report
For a return, a warranty claim or a sale: print it, save it as a PDF, or copy the text.
How it works
- Connect the controller with a cable or Bluetooth and press any button so the browser shows it.
- Hold the controller in both hands, as in a game, and press «Strong motor».
- Then «Weak motor» and «Both motors», answering «Did you feel it?» after each one.
- Where the browser can drive the small motors inside the triggers, «Trigger motors» appears as well: try it with a finger on each trigger.
- Run the other checks below, or copy the report as it stands: it says whether the rumble was felt.
What the results mean
- Two motors, two feelings
- Most controllers carry a heavy motor in the left grip for a deep, strong rumble and a light one in the right for a fine buzz. One can fail while the other runs on, so the test runs them one at a time.
- Which browsers can run them
- Chrome, Edge and Safari 16.4 or later on a computer can run a controller's motors, and so can Chrome on Android, though Chrome and Edge on Windows do not run a PS5 DualSense's. Firefox and the browsers on iPhone and iPad cannot: the test says so rather than staying silent.
- Keep this tab in front
- A browser stops a page's rumble as soon as its tab is hidden. Leave this tab open and on top for the second the motor runs.
- What a page cannot ask for
- A web page can ask only for strong and weak rumble at a strength, for a time. The finer effects some controllers have in games, such as the DualSense's haptics and its triggers' resistance, are not open to web pages.
Questions
I felt nothing. Is the motor broken?
Not yet proven. Close any program that may hold the controller, such as Steam, and try the cable instead of Bluetooth. If the motor stays still in games too, it is the motor or its connection.
Only one motor runs. What does that mean?
That motor or its wire has failed; the other is fine. Answer «No» for the one you did not feel, so the report records it for the shop or the repair.
Can it test a racing wheel's force feedback?
No. Browsers can run only a controller's rumble motors, not a wheel's force feedback. The wheel's buttons still show in the test.
Why are there no rumble buttons on my phone?
On iPhone and iPad no browser can run a controller's motors from a page. On Android, Chrome can; the buttons appear once the controller is connected.
